Most recently

My image 'Beware the Taniwha of the Foreshore' was chosen was highly commended at Taranaki Art Awards 2011.

What Next

There is always a what next? I hope to have a few days in Christchurch during the Xmas period so perhaps I can enlarge my Southern series. Meantime I have two further commissions and an early 2010 Exhibition to prepare for. Busy, busy! Watch my gallery pages for new input!

Art To Melbourne

Earlier this year a school friend from my college days re-entered my life and commissioned an image of Taranaki. This week I sent it to Melbourne where she lives with her family.....another image of our mountain on an Australian wall! How cool is that! You can see which one I sent her in my gallery pages.

A Milestone Reached

My style continues to evolve and remains a very exciting, creative part of my life. I will be reaching a personal milestone with my inclusion in a book being published with the support of Taranaki Arts Community Trust & the Real TArt Gallery. The book explores and exposes the artistic journeys of 35 Emerging and Collectable Artists and will be released in early December.
I extend a personal invitation to my supporters to attend the launch on December 10, Real TArt Galley, 19 Egmont Street, New Plymouth at 6 pm.
This coincides with the opening of new gallery space at Real TArt....more room for more art!

NZ Affordable Art Show, Wellington

Yesterday I sent my two entries off to the Affordable Art Show in Wellington. They have a new concept this year of a specially selected section - Signature Pieces - where the eventual winner will be decided by public vote. How exciting is that?! I decided to enter another image from my Southern Mountain series - Summer Alps II- and to also send a piece for display and hopefully sale - Summer Alps/Ribboned River. Now I just have to wait to see if I have been selected, but there is plenty to do in the meantime.
Keep watching. B.27.5.09

Peters Doig Art Awards, Blenheim

I have just completed my entry to this exhibition to be held in Blenhem. I created an image called "Of Melting Snow & Alpine Streams" and then was devastated to find it was 20mm too wide and did not match the criteria of the exhibition. But I was rescued by Alby Carter, Artist, Okato who very professionally shaved the errant 20 millimeters off and then restretched it for me!
Whew...so I was able to enter my image after all. A salutory lesson for me to read the fine print and make the conversion from the inches that so many canvases are supplied in to the correct equivalent millimetres!

Alps Series

Southern Alps series

This series is really giving me a lot of pleasure. I have now painted 4 images. Some can be found at Real Tart Gallery, New Plymouth others are pictured on this site.
I also just sold a large image from Okurukuru Cafe & Winery. Their link can also be found on this site.
Take a look.

My Taranaki

I was born and raised in Taranaki, and have lived most of my life in the province. Whenever I travel, my home in Taranaki and the mountain always call me back.

My creative journey continues and brings me great personal satisfaction.

I particularly enjoy producing images of our geographical icons such as mountains, our coastline and our offshore islands.

To date my paintings of my home region of Taranaki have included Mt Taranaki and her sister ranges - Paritutu and the Sugar Loaves,The Kaitakes and the Pouakais and of other New Zealand icons - Mitre Peak, Young Nick’s Head, Cape Kidnappers, Maunganui Heads, Lyttelton Harbour, , Te Mata Peak, Mt Hikurangi,Te Reinga o Wairua(Cape Reinga)

A Little About my Art

The contours of our wonderful geographic icons inspire my creativity.

I deliberately exclude 'man's' impact and concentrate on translating the landscapes I see into ribbons of colour.

My subjects to date have included
  • Mt Taranaki (12 paintings)
  • Paritutu & the Sugar Loaf Islands (3 paintings)
  • Mitre Peak
  • Cape Kidnappers (2 paintings)
  • Waimakariri & The Southern Alps
  • Te Mata Peak
  • Lyttelton Harbour
and many points in between.

About Sequoia 8

Sequoia 8 was a group of eight developing and exhibiting artists who met regularly to support and encourage each other.

We were extremely fortunate to have the participation in our group of an international artist ex South Africa - W George Boys. George exposed us to the endeavours of famous artists, critiqued their work, and explained their styles and genres.

For myself, these meetings were my first exposure to art and art history and lead to my reading further about those whose styles I enjoy....another enriching journey!
I particularly like the work of Van Gogh, especially his landscapes.
On my wish list is the possibility of achieving a more equal balance of work and creativity in my life that will allow me to continue on this journey

Participation to date includes -
  • NZ Affordable Art Show Wellington, 2005 & 2006 (Sold 8 pieces)
  • Sequoia 8 Art Exhibition 2006 New Plymouth (Sold 9 pieces)
  • Taranaki Art Review Opunake 2005, and winner of Rural Section 2006 ($2000)
  • Turangawaewae - a place to stand, sold for $1600
  • NZ Landscapes Exhibition, Percy Thomson Gallery, Stratford
  • Invited to contribute to 26th National Art Exhibition Exhibition in Napier in May.

What am I doing at present?

I am preparing my entry to the NZ Affordable Art Show to be held in Wellington later this year.
Its a large canvas showing the alps and a ribboned river.
I also have a work nearly ready for an exhibition to be held in Napier...this one is Cape Kidnappers.

Thank you for taking the time to find out a little more about me and the journey I am on.
